Resources are one of the core elements of game-play. When you create a unit or building, research a technology/age, and repair damaged structures, it will be deducted from your total resources. The primary way to get resources is by having citizens gather different types of resources. Another way to get some resources is from a tribute from an ally (your enemies are allowed to give you resources as well, for what ever reason). There are civilization bonuses that can reduce the cost of creating a certain type of unit/building, or increase the rate of how fast your citizens can collect resources. There are also technologies that increase the rate of collecting, which can be researched at a Capitol, Town center (TC), or Granary (only for farming upgrades).

There are 5 different types of resources:

  • Food
  • Wood
  • Stone
  • Gold
  • Iron

Gathering Resources

To collect resources, you need some citizens to go to a certain resource node, such as some trees for wood or gold mines for gold. Food can be collected in different ways. Hunting and foraging and fishing allow you to gather from the map's natural resources, or you can build farms, which have essentially no limit on how much food it holds, unlike the forage patches and animals.

Starting Resources

In random map games, the host chooses a setting for the amount of starting resources a player will receive. The different selections are:

  • Deathmatch
  • Standard - High
  • Standard - Low
  • Tournament - Defensive
  • Tournament - Low

Someone should probably add the exact amounts for each here sometime...

With the introduction of Omega's Patches, the amounts for Standard - Low and Tournament Defensive have been drastically altered in order to create some new, interesting types of game-play.
