Resources are one of the core elements of gameplay. When you create a unit or building, research a technology/age, and repair damaged structures, it will be deducted from your total resources. The primary way to get resources is by having citizens gather different types of resources. Another way to get some resources is from a tribute from an ally (your enemies are allowed to give you resources as well, for what ever reason). There are civilization powers that can reduce the cost of creating a certain type of unit/building, or increase the rate of how fast your citizens can collect resources. There are also technologies that increase the rate of collecting, which can be researched at your Capitol/TC.

There are 5 different types of resources.

Food

Wood

Gold

Iron

Stone

Gathering Resources

To collect resources, you need some citizens to go to a certain resource node, such as some trees for wood, Gold mines for gold, Iron mines for iron, Stone mines for stone. Food can be collected in different ways. One way is with hunting, where a citizen kills an animal and forages from the dead body. Another way is to go to forage patches located near your starting capitol, which have 3000 food for each patch, and lastly, you can build farms, which has no limit on how much food it holds, unlike the forage patches and all the animals getting killed by your enemy.
